Chevrolet Cobalt 2005-2010 Oil Life Reset Guide

The Chevrolet Cobalt is a compact car initially introduced by Chevrolet in 2004 for the 2005 model year. The Cobalt replaced both the Cavalier and the Toyota-based Geo Prizm/Chevrolet Prizm as Chevrolet's compact car. The Cobalt was available as both a coupe and sedan, and is based on the GM Delta platform also shared with the Chevrolet HHR and the Saturn ION. Also available was a high performance, Chevrolet Cobalt SS.

A Pontiac version was sold primarily as the Pontiac G5 in Canada for its entire run (where it was briefly known as the Pontiac Pursuit and later Pontiac G5 Pursuit), as well as the Pontiac G4 in Mexico for 2005–2006, and in both Mexico and the United States under the G5 name for 2007–2009. In all cases, the G5 replaced the Cavalier-related Pontiac Sunfire. While the Cobalt was available as a 2-door coupé and a 4-door sedan in all markets it was offered in, the G5 was only available as a coupé in the United States while a sedan version was sold alongside the coupé in Canada and Mexico.

As with their predecessors, all Cobalts and its Pontiac equivalents were manufactured at GM's plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico and Lordstown, Ohio. The United States Environmental Protection Agency classifies the Cobalt as a subcompact car.

The Cobalt fell short of the best small cars. Its 2.2-liter engine was noisy and relatively thirsty. The ride was relatively comfortable, but handling wasn't agile. The steering was too light at low speeds. The rear seat was not roomy, even by small-car standards, and interior fit and finish was unimpressive. The turbocharged SS version was quick and fun to drive. The Cobalt sedan received a score of acceptable in the IIHS side-crash test with the standard head-curtain air bags. ESC was only available on higher-trim models.



How to Reset the Engine Oil Life System
 The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Whenever the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs where the oil is changed prior to a CHANGE OIL SOON message being turned on, reset the system. 

After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset:



1. Turn the ignition to RUN, with the engine off.

2. Press the information and reset buttons on the DIC at the same time to enter the personalization menu.

3. Press the information button to scroll through the available personalization menu modes until the DIC display shows OIL-LIFE RESET.

4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you the system has been reset.

5. Turn the key to LOCK.

If the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes back on when you start your vehicle, the engine oil life system has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.
